I have changed a lower shift cable on my alpha 1.
There is a little a little screw that threaded inside of shift cable slide.
I tightened the screw, but the slide has as little as 1/32" play.
Is this normal? If should be fixed, what should I do?

You do not want that set screw tight, the slide must turn freely on the cable. Use the wire that came with the kit to lock the screw in place.

Don,
Should I be worried about 1/32" "back and forth" play?
Thank you!

no lenny, its that way by design so as to not lock the slide to the cable and enable it to rotate independently.

Re: Lower shift cable for alpha 1

Thank you guys!
It was my first time doing the shift cable.
So, I wanted to make sure I got it correctly.

I learned a few valuable lessons: :)
1. DO NOT tighten clamps on the shift cable below prior to threading 9/16" into bellhousing. I tightened clamp and took a short break. Leter when I came back, I started threding the 9/16" and did not really understand why the nut is turning with such resistance :) . Good thing I only turned it a few turns and did not try to thred it in all the way :) :) . Cable below was not damaged, so I untightened the clamp and it turned itself right back to normal. :)

2. If not for you guys, I would not even bother replacing it myself. Combination of IBOATS forum and Merc. manual makes it possible to accomplish new things yourself.

I would like to THANK YOU ALL!!!
Happy boating season :) :) :)
