Changed shift cable last week. Put the drive back on.
Now, I tested shifting with engine not running and here it is:
I get good forward and neutral, but it is not going into reverse. It gets to the point where the control gets resistance. I did not try to force it...
What is wrong?

Did you drop the lower unit when you did the shift cable? If so the shift shaft moved on you. (if your moving the prop while shifting)

Re: Lower shift cable on Alpha 1

It's because of the ramps on the dog clutch faces, if you try shifting and the faces on the dog line up directly with the faces on the gear, all you'll achieve is a streched/broken cable. As rodbolt said, either the engine or the prop MUST be turning when selecting gears, that applies to either forward or reverse. You got lucky with forward because the faces on the dog are lining up with the 'depressions' in the gear, so it goes in ok.

Try it with the engine running OR someone turning the prop in the opposite direction to the gear you're selecting. ie, turn the prop ccw while selecting forward and cw for reverse.

Chris...........

Thank you guys. I went to the yard alone and there was nobody to ask to turn the prop shaft while I shift. It was in forward all the time, so I guess that is why I was able to get back into forward once I shifted to neutral. Will check tomorrow... Thanks!!!
