when i was draining my lower unit and was refilling it i took the allen screw out. i thought that was where it gets air from. i didnt know you filled it from the bottom. i looked in my book and it said the allen screw holds a bearing? do you think it messed anything up when i removed the allen screw?

i think the allen screw goes in farther now than it was when i took it out? i screw it in and it runs all way in untill it runs out of threads?

I doubt the bearing would move, when I took my lower unit apart the set screw just went across the top corner of the bearing which is still a press fit and probably should bottom out. But, Im not an expert on this.

Odds are that was the screw that holds the shifting fork in place. This requires removal of the lower unit and disassembly, unless you get lucky and can remove the motor and lay it on it's side, jiggle it and get it to match up again and get the screw back in. I may be be wrong on this model, but others will correct me if so...

Rick is right and it's a phillips screw, NOT an allen screw. Good luck getting it back. As Rick said, you may get lucky. If you can't get it back correctly (you can verify by shifting while spinning the prop) take it to a dealer.

i drove it like that and it shifts fines and doesnt make any noises. it just screwed all the way in and its not hitting anything. the screw i took out was a allen screw right at the water vents

Its the bearing retainer screw like you thought and its probably fine like it is. If the bearing had moved it probably wouldnt go back in at all.

Also, I hope you put some sealer on the allen screw or it could back out or get water into your lu

It keeps the bearing from moving once its in place. Make sure you use some sort of sealant to lock the screw in place and to prevent it from leaking.

so if the bearing move the screw wouldnt go in? how tight do i tighten the allen since it bottoms out? just snug it up with some lock tight?

Re: lower unit allen screw

I would loctite it in about the same position it was oroiginally in, it doesn't have to bottom out. I might also put some silicone in the hole over the screw if theres room since this screw doesnt need to come out very often if ever. I was thinking that if you bottom it out it may go in to far depending on its length and let water in. So I would put it about the same as it was.
