I have a 1986 150 horse Evinrude V6. How do I check the lower unit to see if it needs lubricant and if I can, how do I lubricate it.

Re: lower unit check

I'm not sure about the 150HP.. I have a 30HP Evinrude and I'm sure they would all be about the same. <br />I would replace any lower gearcase lube that is in your lower unit by removing the drain/fill plug that is located at the bottom portion of the case (do not remove the shift cradle screw which is located directly next to it on the front portion of the case) and remove lube level plug (located above the water intake) from the side of gearcase (both plugs should look identically the same so you shouldn't be confused of what plugs to remove) and completely drain gearcase of old lube. Then place tube of new lube in drain/fill hole at the bottom of case and fill until lube appears at lube level hole at the top (located above the water intake). Then tighten both plugs and you're good to go. Good Luck
