Will the lower unit of a 1988 60 hp fit on a 1979 40hp? If so... are there gear differences and can i make up for the difference with a different size prop?

Re: Lower unit compatability

Not only fast Laddies but straight to the point... I'm asking because i have an 88 60 horse with a blown cylinder but good lower unit and a 79' 40 horse with a couple of leaky seals. If they are a direct swap, that would be good. I currently have a 10-3/8 15 pitch prop on the 40 and a 10 1/2 12 pitch on the 60. Will that be enough of a drop to make up for the gearing difference. The motor is on a 1981 17' alumacraft bass rig.

Re: Lower unit compatability

I'll do that... As it happens, i have a teleflex tach and harness on order now. My boat has never had a tach on it. I'm hoping it will be easy to hook up. As for swapping lower units, all i really need to do is make sure the units are in forward before pulling apart from the top half... correct? Then it should just slide right up into the 40?
