Lower unit compatibility?

I recently learned i need a lower gear case for my alpha one gen one off a 3.0
I found one in the classifieds but i do not know how to tell if it is compatible. Guy said it came off a 80 something 120 horse 4 cylinder. are there numbers I can check to see if it will work with my alpha one? Or some other way to tell?

Ayuh,... Generally speakin',...
A lower unit off a merc will interchange from about the late-70s, thru 1991....
