Lower unit crack - any tip to fix it?

Hello
I’d like to ask for input on methods of repairing the lower unit crack, which exists on one side of the exhaust escape. The crack opens less than 1/16’’ wide on the exhaust edge, is about 2 inches long, it’s horizontal and logically gets narrower further from the edge. I suppose the previous owner hit the lower unit. I will gladly receive any suggestion, but because of possible technology limitations - the easier, the better. Would the argon welding do the trick? Well, can’t think of any service of this kind here… How abut epoxy putty for aluminum and aluminum alloys?
Don’t think that’s too relevant, but it’s yamaha V4.
PD. I will stay several days with no internet access probably, so please be patient if there is no feedback from me. Thanks!

Since I see where you boat I think I know whats wrong? Those yammies have a problem with corrosion between the housing and the bearing carrier. If I understand your explaination correct? Anyway the corrosion has forced the housing to crack from the inside. It looks like heck but It will not hurt anything to use it. TIG welding (with argon) and filing and painting will make it look better. If you ever have to remove the bearing carrier get ready for some new parts cause its going to be a bear to get all that stuff out.

You have a prop shop down their that can weld it for you down their. I forget their name? You can call Ken at Nelson Marine service down their and he can give you the number.

Thanks Trent. That’s what I thought, it looks like not hurting too much, but I was worried, that the crack could get worse – opening wider and longer with time, and getting too close to some parts with possible strain, like the bearing carrier you mention. Up to now, that’s just more like esthetics thing - exhaust “tail pipe” cracked. What worries me is what happens if it gets worse.

About welding, any additional precautions? That’s a lot o heat close to lower unit oil. Is there any danger here?

BTW, are you sure we mean the same Panama City? I'm in Panama, not Florida :) .

hello
drill a small 1/8"hole at the end of the crack to prevent it from growing. the crack is there due to corrosion buildup where the bearing carrier, lock ring and spanner nut all meet. if left inchecked it will split a housing.
some have tried to weld them and it works for a while.
good luck and keep posting

Thanks Rodbolt, I didn’t think in this cracked windshield technology :D ! That’s definitely the easiest thing that can be done and the immediate one, perfect. I guess that drilling the hole and patching the whole thing afterwards with proper putty - just for the looks - would not hurt either, right? Thanks again.
