I recently bought a boat with a "81" 90hp Evinrude that sat in a garage for 12yrs. I run it once, but it died after about 10 minutes. how do I take the lower unit off, and replace the water pump. The heads were so hot, I couldn't touch them.(It was peeing). I guess I have to check the water (jackets)? too.I have all the bolts out,and it dropped about 1 inch and thats it.

Re: lower unit disassemble

Including the one under the trim tab? Did you disconnect the shift linkage (the pivot pin/bolt is typically under the carbs)?

While you have the LU off, you might want to make sure all water passages are clear by forcing water up the water tube. If this is a SW motor, you may find a lot of salt in the water passages.

Bottom of the cavitation plate. It's a round deal w/ a bolt in the middle and a tab on the periphery. You should mark it before removal, so you don't have to adjust w/o knowing where to start.

PS: Don't rotate the shift rod during work on the water pump, or you'll have some trouble getting "L" right!
