Last night I removed my lower unit in the attempt to hunt down a leaky seal and to inspect the impeller. Great news! Impeller looks brand spanking new!

I cannot seem to remove the lower half of the lower unit to inspect the gears :( . There appears to be only 2 studs that hold the lower to the upper. I removed the prop and the bearing carrier to gain access to the shorts stud, removed the nut and washer. I also removed the nut and washer from the long stud at the top of the upper half. The front of the unit is where the 2 halfs refuse to seperate.
I tried strategicly hammering on the top of the long stud to jar it loose. I even tried unsing an air chissle (surgically of course) and still no go.
I can pass a thin puddy knife from the rear of the unit to about halfway towards the front then it gets tight tight tight.

Okay boys! Lets here what ya have to say!
Thanks

I put a '66 35hp LU on my '70 55 last year. I didn't have a problem getting it separated. What about the shift rod seal? Could it be frozen up. NAPA has replacement seals. The only one I can't find is the gasket between them LU sections. But, you could fabricate one fairly easily.

Scotiany, could the shift rod seal bind both halves of the lower unit together? Any pointers on how to maybe get this turd loose?

just a comment on the impeller... they can "look" good, but still have taken a set and/or be hard & brittle. I've had motors where I've changed good looking impellers that seemed to pump water OK, but then found that the new impeller pumped WAY more water.

Taking it apart is all the work, so IMHO unless you know it's only a season or so old, it's always worth the few bucks to put a new impeller in.

If your impeller breaks apart and your motor overheats/cooks, it's too late! Think of it as "preventative" maintenance.

that's my $.02

Brent

There should be one bolt on top of the lower unit next to the shift linkage. I believe you need a 1/2 inch wrench for this and there is another one down by the bearing cage. With water pump and drive shaft removed it should come apart. It might be that who ever took it apart last time used a gasket adhesive and it is acting like glue. I hate that stuff. It takes forever to get it off to make a good seal when you have to put it back together again. I hope you bought a seal kit. As long as you got it apart you may as well replace them all. The bearing cage seal is a real bear to get out. A standard combination pliers works well getting this one out. If you need a new gasket between upper and lower unit let me know and I will mail you one. I have an original and make copies of it with gasket paper. If you need it email me at ralgoetz@comcast.net.

Good luck

HEY eURO

nice avitar by the way.....I have the nuts removed from both short and long stud. As for the gasket adhesive....Right on the bottom my friend. That poop is hell. Whoever did the work last Used waaaay tooo much and I think that it got up around the long stud. I have tried applying heat and the mighty power of thor (rubber mallet) and even my own sweat.....I even threw in some very colorful words for good measure.

I did manage to ge the bearing carrier out but have not replaced the oil seal behind the bearing . I got a new O-ring though! :)
Do I need to pull the bearing out or can I work the seal out and back in again? looks as though the bearing needs to be removed first.

As far as a seal kit goes, everywhere I go ppl tell me to bring in all of the old seals to get the match.

Euro....the gasket would be much appreciated. Thanks man!

The colorful words are usually what ends up fixing it. The beetlespin is the only lure you need in your tackle box

Here is the part number for the seal kit you need. You should be able to get it from a merc dealer. The part number is a quick silver number which Mercury sells. 26-820645A 1. That seal kit has everything you need to seal the lower unit up except for the gasket I am sending you.
