Lower Unit Drain Plug

Hi, I have a Four Winns with a 190 I/O. I want to change the oil in the lower unit but the plug is being very stubborn.

Are there any solutions to loosening this screw. Brute force has not worked so far and I am reluctant to use heat on the lower unit itself in an attempt to unscrew the plug.

Thanks in advance for your help and assistance.

Ayuh,... I've never heard of a Four Winns Outdrive,..?? Muchless a Four Winns 190hp Motor,...

Stubborns screws are removed with an Impact Driver,.... Sears carries them...

What year is your drive, and is it white or black? OMC (white) used a ford 302 motor rated at either 175 or 190hp. I agree with Mr B, get an impact driver.

Try taking a hand held punch and catch the edge of where a slotted screw driver would go on the drain plug and give it a strike with a ball peen hammer. Obviously driving the loosening direction for the plug. Stay on the plug as not to do damage to the lower unit casting.

Folks, sorry for the confusion.

It is a Four Winns boat with a 190 hp Volvo Penta I/O. I will give the hand held punch a try.

Thanks for your replies.

Don't waste your time with that punch, it most likely will not work....
You can get an impct driver for $20 & do it right....
You will be surprised at how easy it will work WITHOUT buggering the screw.....;)

35 years as a trained mechanic and I have impact drivers. Both hand held and pneumatic. It is one of the ways that have worked (many times) in my SHORT career without "buggering" up the threads of the casting that can't be easily repaired. Its also a way of directing the most amount of force in the direction that is needed which is something a impact tool does not do. If the drain screw will not work with a screw diver its time to throw it away.

Good for you...... ;)
At least you mentioned that there was a possibility of damage using the hacker method, kudos...:)

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to know that using the correct tool makes sense..... :)

I see that by the lack of your occupation profile you are neither a rocket scientist, a mechanic and very little marine experience. Now if you go back to my FIRST post concerning the question you will see the statement "as not to damage the lower unit casting". Re read it till it soaks in.

Re: Lower Unit Drain Plug

I saw that...
However, the fact that using your method, you have to caution against damage tells me there is a better option.....
The correct tool is available that has NO possibility of causing damage, what would you use?....
Oh, you all ready answered that didn't ya?.....:)
I guess you have been doing it wrong for thirty five years.... ;)
Thanks for playing.....:D

Ayuh,.... I just read the Whole thread,.....
Your way will either bugger the Screw, or the Housing,.... Period....
We are advising your basic DIYers here at iboats,... Not trained Mechanics like Us....

I too am a lifelong Wrench,.... I've got Tons of them,... Literally...
Impact drivers of All shapes, sizes,+ power.... Air, electric,+ Hand Held.....
For the situation above,... A 3/8" drive Hand Held would be the Most logical Tool to reach for....
It'll remove the plug,..
Without buggering up the Screw,.. Or the Housing...

A hammer,+ punch are at Best,...
An Emergency technique to fall back on in,.. Well,.. An Emergency....

Calm down guys, we all do things differently.

Do you guys use perfect seal on the plugs?

Sorry, I though you were funnin'....
No, they don't need it, but you should change the o rings every time....;)

I use perfect seal in addition to new o-rings. Probably overkill.
