Hi: Everyone,
I have a 1989 90 hp Evinrude, and the Evinrude service manual.

My L/U drive shaft twisted off level with the bearing housing.
Can the drive shaft be removed and changed with out pulling the prop shaft, or rebuilding the entire L/U?
Thanks,
Lee

Re: Lower Unit Drive Shaft

The gearcase has to come apart. The pinion gear is held on with a nut. The gearcase has to come apart to get to this nut. The new drive shaft must also be shimmed correctly.

Re: Lower Unit Drive Shaft

Thanks: R.Johnson,
I was not wanting to take it all apart. The manual shows a total tare-down and is not clear own just the drive shaft removal only. I think it takes a few specific tools to shim it correctly and I don't have them. But thanks for your reply. I guess I will look for a used L/U.
