I started a post last week about lower unit casting numbers and got a lot of good info from Laddies (Thanks again). I have done a lot of serching for a different lower unit for my '65 650 Merc in the past week and found a few. My new question is I have noticed that some driveshafts (I am looking for an 8 spline driveshaft) have a pin on the top and some don't (mine does not). Will one with the pin on top fit a motor that's driveshaft did'nt originally have one. One of the LU's I looked at has a shaft that is only something like 3/4" longer than my shaft (measured from the top of water pump to the end of the pin on the driveshaft) because of that pin on top. Could that pin be removed if it were to interfere with the driveshaft sliding into the crankshaft all the way. Thanks.
