Evinrude model # 4932D, 1979 2 cyl/4 hp
I am about to replace the impeller. Should the water tube grommet also be replaced, as a matter of course, or only if damaged noticeably? And how do I get the prop off? Does it just pull off, after removing the cotter pin? It doesn't move on mine, and I didn't want to force it, if something else is holding it in place.
While I'm asking, is there a recommended motor oil and gear oil, other than the generic available? Thanks for any help.

hsk,

The grommet is kind of your call. It's usually not nesessary.

Your prop should just pull off. Is the spinner off now? The spinner is the part behind the prop. Some uncrew.

I prefer to use OMC (now Bombardier) Hi Vis lube.

Make sure you replace the fill and drain plug gaskets.

I beleive your motor should have a plastic prop without a spinner. That said, once you remove the cotter pin, the prop should just pull off the hub. The hub has a rubber sleeve over it that can stick to the prop and hub making it difficult to pull off. Some gentle pursuasion may be in order... Avoid WD40 as it may cause the rubber to swell, compounding the problem. Simply getting the prop wet may help.
- Scott
