i have a 1985 115 evininrude, the clutch dog is wore and needs replacing. the forward and reverse gears show little wear. my question is this. should i replaces all the gears or only change the clutch?

The budget is tight so i would like to be able to only change the clucth. will doing this only
create problems in the future or will the forward and reverse gears be fine.

Forward and reverse gears will likely outlive rest of motor .as long as they are in good condition and don't presently have excessive backlash .you'll be fine to just service the clutch

OB, I am in the same situation. What do you mean by "backlash".

Re: lower unit gear change?

Backlash is the clearance between mating gear surfaces. In this case between drive shaft gear and lower unit gears.
