Lower Unit Gearbox Question

Hello everyone--Would the gears from a 1982 25 horse Johnson longshaft lower unit fit on my 1978 20 horse Johnson shortshaft Model #20cr78c. I came across this nice looking lower unit and I need a few gears off of it. The lower unit casing on both motors looks almost identicle. Any information is greatly appreciated.

Hi Mountain<br /> Check the mod#s on your 20hp. I see no record of a 1978 20hp. In order to be able to tell if parts are going to work you need to identify both units, the being repaired and the donnor. Part#s can also work. Outside of that any answer would be a shot in the dark.

thanks Al. My Johnson 20 was made in Canada and have had problems identifying parts for it. I have found that parts to a 25 horse of the same year would fit.

More info. the model# to the lower is j25telcn--gear ratio is 12:21. Hope this helps--also I looked in my manual (duh!) and it shows the gearcase that fits Johnson/evinrude 1973-1984 20 and 25 hp. This may be a sure sign that the gears will match, right?
