I recently removed my outdrive and seperated the lower unit, I have removed the water pump as well. When I turn the vertical shaft that connects to the prop shaft it is not smooth, it feels slightly rough, is it supposed to feel smooth? It does this whether in gear or neutral. Thank you

Re: Lower unit gears

if you do not have a preload pin on the driveshaft, try turning the drive upside down. it will now turn smoothly.
your lower gears push the driveshaft upwards under power, this sets the upper bearing.
hopefully this 454 is in a small light boat and you use a gentle hand on the throttle

Re: Lower unit gears

Thank you for your response I will check that, unfortunately my alpha one is pushing a 3600lb 24' deep vee boat, any recommendations other than slow take offs? I don't imagine an alpha 2 will bolt up to a transom cut for an alpha one.
