Hey guys I just purchased a boat with a 1989 Johnson 60 hp (3cyl). Unfortunately, the first time in the water I find that the lower unit is not working....(no reverse and trying to pop out of gear in forward gear). I disassembled the lower unit and the clutch dog and reverse gear are visibly damaged/rounded off at the edges. I ordered a new clutch dog and I am awaiting for the reverse gear. I guess my question is should I replace the forward gear/pinion as well? The forward gear edges seem sharp. Is there anything else I should know before I begin to put this thing back together? All the bearings look great. Tips and advice are appreciated as this is the first time i've ever torn into a lower unit. I have a Seloc manual but it doesn't give very good detail. Any suggestions? And, I have already ordered a new water pump. Thanks, Bleubeans.

Whats up Beans,

I haven't torn into any of my lower units past the water pump, so the only advice I can really give is to take your time putting the lower unit back into the motor. Make sure to line up the water tube and shift rod. Also, you can probably find an OEM manual on ebay pretty cheap. -Bill

If you replace the fwd gear you will get a new pinion gear with it and that will have to be shimmed with the proper gauges.
