I have a 1977 Johnson 85 and am wondering if my lower unit will fit on an early model 90 hp??? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

You will find that the 77 model 85 shifts to forward with a DOWN motion of the shift rod.-----------The later model 90 hp motors shift to forward with an UP motion of the shift rod.

maybe a control unit that 77 model used could be used then to solve that issue (thats unless other things dont match up such as driveshaft)

For the record a '77 85hp will NOT function with a newer gearcase.

However a '77 140 will. After that virtually all xflows use the same lower unit.
