I have an 04 merc 50 elpto. I just swapped it onto my boat from another boat. When i turn the prop by hand it makes a clunking sound and it shifts really hard into both gears. i havent tried to start it, this was just by hand. I sure hope I havent messed something up and hopefully someone can help??? Also, I have temporarily misplaced the plastic piece that holds together the throttle and shift cable. The thing that connects the to plastic pieces that are on the threaded part of each cable. Any help is appreciated!!! Thanks!!!

Re: Lower Unit HELP

The clunking is the clutch dogs ratcheting. In gear the prop will ratchet in one direction and lock in the other. If it makes the ratcheting noise with the controls in neutral, you need to readjust the shift cable (and probably the throttle cable as well). The reason you have trouble shifting with the engine not running is the clutch dogs are not lined up. Aways have someone turn the prop by hand if you intend to shift with the engine off.
