Alright, I got the water pump replaced on my 9.5 hp. I got the lower unit lined up and the shift shaft connected, I reached up to test the shift lever, and it was frozen. I then took the lower unit back off and it was still frozen. What's wrong with it? It was shifting fine before. Thanks

Re: Lower Unit Help

Shift/throttle interlock jammed. Is the throttle (twist grip) backed off to the "slow" position? Will it even go to the slow position? The idle speed knob on the side of the tiller hinge may be screwed in too far.

Re: Lower Unit Help

Thanks! I feel so stupid now! Alright, now how does the lower unit push back up into place once the coupler is connected?

Re: Lower Unit Help

Should be no problem. You may have to rotate the flywheel to align the driveshaft splines. I hope you have the spark plugs disconnected first---those 9.5's start pretty easy.

Thats what it was, thanks. Also, when I went to drain the gear lube out of it, water drained out as well. There were no o-rings on the screws, and it started draining before I took the vent screw out indicating there wasn't a proper seal. Do you think the water in the lower unit was caused by the lack of seal on the screws? Thanks

Re: Lower Unit Help

No seals on the drain/vent screws will allow water into the lower unit, install the proper seal washers ( not o-rings) and see if it fixes the problem.

Re: Lower Unit Help

How do I test this as I have not hooked up to a gas tank to start this motor yet? Just put the lower unit in water and let it sit?

Re: Lower Unit Help

Today, I pulled the prop off. I found a whole birds nest of grass/reeds right up against the prop shaft seal. I have heard this will do something bad to the seal?? I removed it all by the way. I am pretty sure the prop shaft is where it is leaking, but i am not completely sure. How bad is the lower unit reseal for a total noob mechanic?

Re: Lower Unit Help

Bump! Any advice??

The prop shaft seals (and driveshaft seals) can be tough to remove without the proper tools. I had good results doing a re-seal kit on the LU of my 25hp though by borrowing a slide hammer and pilot bearing puller from the local auto parts mega-store.

Is oil leaking out of the LU anywhere? Oil is more viscous, so water can leak in more easily than oil can leak out - but if oil is leaking out, then you can be sure that's a place that water is leaking in.

Definately add the proper drain/fill washers, and the rest is up to you. You could pay a shop to vacuum test it. You could run it a while and then change the oil (check for water). You could do a pre-emptive seal kit.

Re: Lower Unit Help

I think I am going to go ahead and reseal it with the help of Iboats. I have not filled it with lube again to check if it is leaking out, should I? Also, the lower unit does feel like it has some oil on it.

Re: Lower Unit Help

Seems to me the older 9.5s 1964-1973 had split seam gear cases It should pull apart very easily.

Re: Lower Unit Help

If I remove all of the screws under the casing around the prop shaft, would this get me started in the right direction? I am going to order a seal kit (found one for 16 bucks) and try to replace it.

6 screws at the bottom then separate the 2 halves.

Re: Lower Unit Help

Alright. After that, do I remove the prop shaft by just pulling it out and working the seal out?

Thanks

Re: Lower Unit Help

I cant say, I've never dissassembled a 9.5 before, I did a clutch dog in an old 25 that was similar in that it also had the split the gear case, that was several years ago but as I recall it wasn't the least bit complicated. If you dont have a manual you could at least look at the gear case schematic in the BRP catalog to get an idea as to how it all fits together.
You will have to take the lower unit off to replace all the seals, not sure if you were aware of that.

Re: Lower Unit Help

At this point, I have the lower unit and prop off, so I'm ready to get rolling!! I can't wait until the day that I (attempt to) wake up this beast.

Thanks

Alright, I ordered the gear case seal kit. When I went to split open the gear case, the screws were seized. I just can't catch a break on this motor haha!
