Thanks Dukedog , does the discription sound like a sportmaster? its been painted and I can tell theres been some grinding on skeg.I welded alum.and s.s. for twentyfive years and I can tell the skeg has had work done to it.
Probably a sporty. If it has had ANY skeg work (welding) it could only be trusted in a non-surfacing application which would really make it useless on a "normal" rig. A small "chip" so ta speak might be ok but if anywhere close to tha hub (bullet) would be a no-no. Some say that they are good enough at tha welding process for it ta hold up fine but I'm not one to put my butt on tha line at a 100 +. Surfacing a gearcase puts a tremendous load on tha skeg and everything else.........jmo
Oh yeah. Paint on a sporty is usually a good indicator of a repair somewhere done tha line......
