I've got a 1985 evinrude 120hp V4.

I removed the lower unit to replace the water pump and now I can't get the lower unit back on. It's like the shift rod is hanging up on something in the motor. If anyone has pulled the lower unit on this motor and got it back on I would really appreciate some help.

When I'm trying to stick the lower unit back on it will get about 2 inches from where it should be and stops. (I've got about a 2" gap between lower unit and motor)

Did you try turning the flywheel to get the driveshaft splines lined up with the crankshaft splines?

Yes try to turn the flywheel, and make sure your water tube is going into the watrerpump housing. 2" sound about where the tube would bind up if it misses. The shift rod can miss the hole in the bottom of the pan, especially with the motor at full tilt. Have some try to manipulate it just under the pan. You have about an inch space there to get to it.
