My buddies and I were on a fishing trip this last weekend and my friend wrecked his dads lower unit on a rock pile  Just wondering if anyone knows if something like that should be covered by insurance or not..We heard from some folks up there that it might be..also wondering if anything further up may be damaged and what to look for.I think we may have a new winter project now :)

This is normally covered under insurance... know for a fact... lost one first time out with new boat, fixed with the help of insurance, SOLD & took up golf!!!

The call of the "water" was too strong, came back 10 years later & put a depth finder on new boat!!! Been happy ever since!!!

:D

A blow to the lower unit is likely to take out your engine coupler on any I/O model. In fact, if your engine is whirring in gear, it could be the prop hub, the coupler, or the lower unit gears that were damaged.

This coupler (much like the hub on your prop) that mates the main shaft to the flywheel. To replace the coupler, the outdrive and the engine must be removed, to access the flywheel. I've seen the work go for $500-$700.

The good news is, there are straightforward diagnostics to determine whether the coupler or the gears are damaged, and, as mentioned, if you have good boat insurance, you may be covered.

Normally, "striking a submerged object" is all the insurance companies are looking to see on a claim. If the boat never ran after the collision then there is a good chance that the gears/shafts were damaged in some way. If the boat had a SS prop be sure to check ahead of the outdrive for any other problems.
