Lower Unit is Not synced

I dropped the lower unit on my 50 HP Mercury Serial Number 2629343 and replaced the impeller and all the gaskets. Got great water flow out pee hole. Now my motor runs in reverse when I push the throttle forward and it runs in forward when I pull the throttle back. It actually works pretty good that way since I was having problems shifting before. Is this OK to leave like this?
How can I sync it correctly if I need to set it back right ? I am assuming I just let the shift in the LU spin when I should not have.
Thanks for any assistance any one might be able to give.

Ed that motor has two neutrals, and you are synched with the wrong one. You need to put the control in neutral, drop the LU, and turn the shift rod on the LU gently until you find the other neutral. Now you may reinstall the LU.

Thanks a lot Chris...

That makes perfect sence now. Appreciate your time. I have a newer shifter now so I will do both today and get it set right.
