Im replacing my lower unit and saw some things that caught my eye.One is there seems to be some oil right behind the wear plate and alo ome rust by th shifter on the lower unit. I posted pics so yo can see what Im talking about. Do I need to look further into this or this common? Two of the gaskets to the housing water pump were torn, So im thinkin that may been causing the rust. thank you

From what I can see in the photos there's nothing unusual here....often some oil, rust, deposits, etc. in the area of the water pump/ shifter shaft.....

Sweet, that's good news. I also checked my gear case and there was no water. Just didn't like to see rust but I guess that's usual. Thank you

Clean the area and spray it down with a light coating of white lithium grease to protect it....this also works great for tilt and trim area, motor, pump, etc.....this grease sets up a good protective barrier against saltwater, etc...
