Lower Unit Leak - With Pics

Below are the pictures of the leak.

We're going to start going throught the procedure to remove the lower unit and check everything.

Anyone have any comments on what to watch for or anything relative to getting it fixed?

(note: we just changed the fluid a few weeks ago, can't imagine that had an effect, but I'm mentioning it because it seems too coincidental)

Thanks

M

Re: Lower Unit Leak - With Pics

I know what that is cause I have been seeing the same thing on mine:(. On my Force the lower unit started filling with water, which in turn makes the oil "rise" to the top and overflow through the shifting link etc (failed o rings that cause the inlet of water to the lower unit)..Not good!! I could be wrong though. When mine started doing that I completely re sealed the lower unit.

Re: Lower Unit Leak - With Pics

I just got done resealing the entire lower unit on mine and took it out yesterday for a test run, well went out side today and looked under the lower unit and there was a small puddle of fresh lower unit oil!! After all the work Ive done im really aggrivated now! It was coming out of the weap holes or drain holes for the lower unit, a small residual. I did notice there is supposed to be a plug in front of the shift rod does anyone know if this could be a cause of the oil? Does that area contain oil? Is it pertanent for that plug? Im thinking when I installed the top housing plate I damaged the O ring due to not lubricating it or I over filled the lower unit...

YES thats it!!! Oh and another thing pulled the lower unit and I think I found the problem! when I installed the new housing plate the front seal around the shift rod was not seated and I tore it! Luckly I had another O ring that fit and I made it work and it seated beautifully! I took off tomorrow with my wife and we are going to go ride in lake pontchatrain hopefully no problems will follow!!

Re: Lower Unit Leak - With Pics

That lower unit is identical to mine too, what is an L drive anyway? Not too sure. On the plus side of me fixing the lower unit (hopefuly:confused:) I went out in my flat boat today after rebuilding the fuel pump cleaning the carb and removing the engine fuel filter and moving a burnt wire from the block and at first she ran like crap till I got to the lake and tied up and wet 2 lines then moved and then went to another location and she started to run perfectly.... Dont aske me why but out of no where from running like crap she fixed herself or got over her temper tantrom and balls to the walls she was running again. I have never seen a motor with so many issues with the carbs and I know there are alot of motors out there with the same issues I see them posting here all the time.
