the circled plug is leaking gear oil from it's center. This appears to lead to the bushing that supports the bottom of the drive shaft and the pinion gear. Can these be replaced? Can it just be sealed with RTV?

Re: Lower Unit Leak

I am curious to what some say.. I have the same problem but mine is a 71'.I was told they were drain holes, but I couldnt find a hole in the plug.It is suppose to allow unburned fuel/oil etc. to drainout of the exhaust cavity. I suspect it is a seal of some sort leaking into the cavity and draining out.I havent taken it apart yet..Like to hear some comments

Re: Lower Unit Leak

this is down in the gearcase, so shouldn't be a vent for fuel or oil. I have the whole gearcase apart at the moment, can't see anything on the other side of that area as it is where the bushing at the bottom of the driveshaft sits. I cleaned the plug out with solvent and paper towel, and oil started appearing in the recessed center section, so I assume the plug itself is cracked or something.

Re: Lower Unit Leak

Hmm. I did the same thing as far as cleaning it and seeing the leak.any idea what the plugs are for?.Also can ya tell if the plug is where the lube oil is(gear Case)?I guess what I am asking is could you repair the plug and be ok or is lube leaking from somewhere? seal etc...and then making its way through the cracked plug (where lube does not belong). Is the plug in the area of the gear case which contains the lube oil??Hope i make sense?:)Thanks

Re: Lower Unit Leak

As I said, the other end of the plug isn't visible, it is behind the bushing that supports the pinion gear. So it is certainly possible that gear oil normally circulates back there.
