Well back in the fall when I winterized, the oil that came out of my lower unit looked like chocolate milk. How hard is it to replace the lower unit seals (I'm assuming thats what I need to do).

Re: Lower Unit leak

There are 6 points for water intrusion.

1- shift rod screw - not likely, DO NOT remove it !!!

2- drain screw gasket
3- vent screw gasket
4- prop shaft seal
5- driveshaft seal
6- shift rod seal

I would replace the drain and vent screw gaskets and fill it with oil.
Test run it a time or two and see if you are still getting water in there.

If need be, get a manual (Clymer repair manual) and replace the seals. The shift rod and drive shaft seals are easy. The prop shaft seal can be a pain.

Re: Lower Unit leak

Had that problem occuring twice on my Force 15 hp. Finaly found out the seals from the vent screw kept on cracking upon installation. Stopped using the soft Force original gasket and used Johnson 9.9hp teflon type seals = end of problem.

sounds good, I've got a clymer manual but haven't messed around with a lower unit in a motor this big...I've taken apart one from a 1950 johnson 5 haha. This one is much bigger
