I have a 40 hp evinrude cir. 1968...I recently put in new power shaft. I have oil dripping from joint of the gearhousing. Can I use permatex along with the "o" ring gaskets????

I'm not real sure where you're saying the leak is. If you're talking about the seam between the l/u and the leg (exhaust housing) there's no gasket or "O" there. Some exhaust leakage is normal.

c/6

Hooty

Hooty, I believe he's talking about an older L/U that splits top and bottom to get to the gears. I've had some that Red RTV stopped the leak and I've had some that I couldn't stop the leak no matter what I tried.

I don't know about using permatex with an "O" ring. Sounds wrong to me! But, whatever works!

the lower unit does split to access the gears. there is a round rubber gasket that seals between the two halves and of course the o-ring around the rear seal. it is leaking from the round 0-ring type gasket. I will try the red RTV sealant. Thanks.....
