I have Lower unit oil leaking from around the front of the prop on my Johnson 40 hp motor. Is there a seal that can be replaced from behind the prop or does the repair need to be from inside of the lower unit? Something for a D.I.Y. or take it to a shop? Thanks

Is it gear oil or exhaust residue.Residue has a gassy smell, gear oil a distinctive gear oil smell.
If oil is leaking out water will be getting in.If you drain the oil have a creamy look or water may be the first to drain.

It has a gear oil smell. Next, I guess I'll have to drain the lower unit. Is the rear seal on the outside of the lower unit or does one get to it from the inside?

The best thing to do is drain the g/c and have it pressure and vacuumed checked. That way you will be sure where it is leaking from. If the seals need replacing you will have to remove the prop shaft carrier bearing housing to get at the seals properly.
