Working on a '58 Evinrude 35 HP Big Twin. I've replace all the seals on the lower unit and I have oil leaking from the seam where the two halves meet. I couldn't find the 3M 847 others here have suggested, but I used Permatex "aviation" sealer (brown) as some others suggested. I filled it with oil and it initially didn't leak (24 hours), I then ran it in a drum, and after sitting another 24 hours I have a quarter sized puddle on the floor. Any suggestions?

There was a spagetti seal in that seam on my early sixties big twin. Do you have one of those? I used to use Permatex #2 non-hardening sealer on the spagetti seal. The aviation gasket is thinner, and may not seal as well.

also you will get some oil spots from the exhaust from the unburnt 2 cycle oil after running your motor, that is normal.

Re: Lower Unit Leaking

I did replace the spaghetti seal. Coated it in the Permatex Aviation Sealer. The new seal didn't seem to fill the grove entirely, but I figured it would when the two halves were pressed together. I guess I will be pulling it back apart and using a different sealer. Luckily the seal kit came with enough spaghetti seal to do the job twice (groan). Thanks for the input!
