After two years of storage I am returning my Jon boat and 1975 Johnson 6HP back to the water! Today, I drained the lower unit and the fluid was brown and seems in real good shape. I do not have a manual on refilling the lower unit and have two questions:

1. Can I use High Viscosity lower unit gear lub SAE 80W-90? If not, recommednations.

2. Do I fill it from the bottom screw laying the motor on the ground?

Thanks!

1. 80W-90 is correct. The marine type is better because it has additives to handle water intrusion better

2. The motor is filled upright, like mounted on a boat. Remove both top and bottom screws (don't touch any phillips head screws).Fill it from the bottom until it squirts from the top vent .

Also, buy a couple new vent/fill plug nylon washers, they're cheap.

Thanks for the quick feedback and support on my servicing. I also changed out the 2 spark plugs today and looking forward to firing up the old dog!

You may want to put some 2 stroke or fogging oil in the cylinders via the spark plug hole and hand crank the motor to give the cylinders some oil before firing her up.
