Sounds dirty....heehheee,

Anyways I was looking at the the parts diagram of the lower unit for my motor at the BRP website.

'76 E-Rude 85HP model 85693G

There are 2 screws for the lower unit which give access for lube. I'm still a newb when it comes to outboards, but if I wanted to put new lube in, what would the process be.

1. Remove top screw so it can drain easier?
2. Remove lower screw in order to allow the fluid to drain?
3. Replace lower screw then replenish fluid at the top?
4. Replace top screw.

How much lube will I need?

Reason I ask is I was at Wally-World earlier today and saw a lower unit lube pump of some sort. Why would someone need one of these when you can simply replenish the fluid from the top screw hole?

TIA.

With engine vertical, remove both screws and let unit drain into a sufficiently sized container--will drain somewhere around a quart. Buy the pump--makes life a lot easier. Pump oil slowly into the lower hole until it comes out the vent on top. Replace top plug first, then quickly remove pump and replace lower plug. Let engine stand vertical for about 1/2 hour to any let air bubbles rise in case. Top off oil amd tighten both plugs securly.

Let's start this over again. 1) Buy new gaskets or O-rings for the vent and drain screws. 2)put pan under motor. 3) make sure the screw you remove is the drain screw. This is the screw on the bulge (gearcase) as far down as possible. Any higher and nothing would come out right??. 4) Remove the drain screw. 5) Remove the Vent screw (upper screw). 6) Let fluid drain. 7) Fill from the DRAIN screw until fluid comes out the top VENT screw. 8) Insert the Vent screw with new gasket or O-ring 9) Insert the drain screw with new gasket or O-ring. 10) Wipe things off. Buy a quart container and a pump that fits the bottle. Lub in squeeze tubes is available but the pump makes the job a lot more sanitary. The reason you fill from the bottom is you would never get the fluid in from the top as you create pressure in the housing. Filling from the bottom forces the air out the top. Simple huh?

Re: Lower unit lube job....

Hey Thanks guys. Being such a newb to outboards I wasn't exactly sure of the procedure, but I knew it couldn't be all that hard to do.

Once again, Thanks!
