Lower unit lube roadmap?

1988 Rude 15 hp

Ive been trying to work out some problems with my lower unit, specifically the prop-axle-thrust bushing fitting. The diagrams ive looked at tell me how it goes together but not up close and how tight everything fits. MY question is this:

How far down the axle does the l/u lube travel? Is it blocked off by the back of the thrust bushing? Or does it travel up and around that and lube where the axle and the prop meet inside the prop bushing and is eventually blocked by the thrust washer at the end?

I ask this because when i reassemble everything, the outside of my prop and bearing housing arn't flush. Theres about a 1/8" gap between them

Looks like this profiled:

PROP____________ ________Bearing Housing
I_I______
I
I
I
_I______
-----------I I--------
gap

ANY HELP IS MUCH APPRECIATED

The lube goes up to the propshaft seals in the end of the bearing carrier.
The thrust washer should seat on the taper of the propshaft and the prop onto the thrust washer. The thrust washer keeps the prop from rubbin on the bearing carrier or the gearcase housing.

So the back of the thrust washer acts as the barrier for the lube then??? Cause mine seats on the taper of the axle but leaves a gap between the thrust washer and the bearing like 1/16", almost like the axle isnt pushed far enough in to the housing? Any ideas?

No. The only lube barrier in that area is 2 seals placed back-to-back in the bearing carrier where the prop shaft comes out. Pull off the prop and the thrust washer and look at the prop shaft. You can see the outer seal.
Your thrust washer is doing what its supposed to do and the gap its leaving sounds about right.
