1989 Johnson GT 100. I have drianed the gear lube out of the lower unit. However, when trying to remove the top screw i could not get it to budge. I have broken and bent a bit, broken a screwdriver, and my wrist feels like it is broken also. The screw is starting to round off. Anyone have any advice on how to remove the screw. Thanks

Well ,I wished you had asked before you rounded off the screw slot. Two ways now.If you have a dremmel tool with a narrow cut off wheel ,you could grind a bit deeper slot(being careful not to hit the case) and try an impact driver to remove.Slot and blade need to fit snug or the same will insue.

Another way is to get a good sharp nose tapered punch and working from the edge of the screw slot, attempt to hammer it counter clockwise and see if you can get it to break free.Good luck.

Heat. The case is aluminum & the screw is stainless steel. They expand at different rates with temperature. Hit it with a propane torch for about 1 minute, then try it again.

Glad to hear it.Make sure you use new seal washers on the replacement.

Good to hear you got it out. My favorite tool is a hand held hammer impact. Iv'e removed 40 year old screws by using it with proper bits, plus mine(Sears craftsman 1/2")can be used with sockets and it only cost 20 bucks. As always, replace the gaskets when you change LU oil.
