I've got a pair of 1991 Evinrude 150's that I've just changed the driveshaft bearing oil seals and installed new water pump kits. So I'm ready to fill the gearcases. The OMC service manual states to "use OMC high vis gearcase oil only. There is no alternative." Okay, that was 13 years ago. Can i use the "Lubrimatic" brand as a substitute with confidence?

Pretty much the same type of stuff, just a generic brand. I use it all the time.

Use synthetic, most, well many here use one synthetic or another, All the Automotive GL-4 synthetics have sufficient anti foaming and moisture additives to work just fine. You can use a GL-4-5 also.

I agree...you need so little of it, it only cost a couple dollars more for synthetic. A full quart of Amsoil is $9, while it's $2 for 10oz of off brand LU lube. It will pay for itself in gas savings easily. Not to mention be better in your LU.

Well, I knew the synthetic answer was coming, but wanted you guys to have a chance to post it. :)

ZmOz, so syn lower lube will save me $8 in gas every year? Cool, cause I only use 2 gallons a year (kicker motor), so I should be getting a refund check. :)

Back when your motors were new, OMC HiVis was the only gear oil the factory recommended. Since then, they have come out with Ultra HPf which is a semi-synthetic blend and works a lot better. It has recently been reformulated to a light bluish color for the 3yr-300 hour oil changes on the new E-TEC motors. The factory says that even with 10% water mixed in it, it still provides better protection than most gear oils and hypoid 90.
