Lower unit oil capacity

Hey guys,

I have a 1962 Evinrude selectric (electric shift) motor, 40 H.P model 35933. I did some extensive lower unit work last fall and happy to say the motor is running great! I have been out several times now, and I've checked the lower unit gear oil a few times just to make sure things are right with it. Today I drained the oil out to replace it with some fresh new oil. For no real reason except to just replace the old lube with new lube and check for metal shavings in the old stuff.

I filled the gear case as I should have, through the drain hole until I saw the new oil come out of the oil level hole above the drain hole. It came out, but my question is this. What is the listed lower gear case capacity for the oil? It took only 12 oz. to fill it completely and that does not seem like enough oil to me, but like I said, it came out of the top hole as I pumped new oil in SLOWLY. Wondering if the gear case is full or not??? Thanks for any replies!

Actually that doesn't sound off. I have a '76 40 HP Johnson and the manual calls for 13 ozs to fill it up...

Re: Lower unit oil capacity

OK. I looked in my Seloc repair manual and could not find anything on it. I was thinking that it is properly filled, however, it seemed like a low number (ounces) to be full. I was hoping that the system was not plugged somewhere or bypassing an area somehow, but I guess not. Thanks for your reply to my question.

Re: Lower unit oil capacity

This brings me to yet another question. My repair manual states to use type 'C' gear case oil, since type C oil is made for the electric shifter. Someone at a marina told me they are out of type 'C' oil, but I can use the high performance gear oil instead in my electric shift motor because he said it's the same thing. Does anyone know FOR SURE that the high performance oil will be ok with the electric shift motors? Thanks.
