Lower unit oil flush with diesel fuel?

I have a 1990 225 Johnson outboard and suspect the wrong oil was put in the lower unit. I would like to flush this before refilling with the proper oil. I was told I could use diesel fuel to perform this flush, but that sounds suspect to me. What should I use to ensure that all the "bad" oil is safely gone before refilling?

I use Mineral Spirits myself...better suited for the job.

You probably can flush with most anything, but I'd worry about the seals being affected. Why not just use the correct oil,run it a bit,and change it again.Do this until all traces of the wrong oil are gone.

What do you suspect was put in wrong ?

Thanks for the quick answer!! I'm not sure. the boat is actually in St. Vincent & The Grenadines, (I'm in Wash, D.C.) and i'm getting all of this info over the phone--so I don't know what was put in---just that it may not have been the right oil. I'm grateful for everyone's advice.8)

I think I would flush with regular lower unit oil due to the seal compatability as DHP mentioned. Lotta different rubbers out there for a lot of different chemicals. Get the wrong combination and they swell, or dry out, crack, and flake apart.

I agree with texasmark fill with the right lower unit specified oil and flush. You can get the easy pump kit which fits in the quart containers for an easier oil change in the lower unit. Just have a large drain pan to catch the excess oil. Good Luck!

Just fill the lower unit up with the right oil and let it keep coming out of the top hole, pump a bunch out of the hole and then when you have a bunch through, plug them up and you should be fine. Just be sure to replace the washers/gaskets around both screws so they don't leak water.
