went to boat shop to purchase a few things for my 91 Bayliner - has a 4cyl Mercruiser 3.0, Alpha 1 in it - and was going to pick up the oil for the lower unit. The guy told me that it was either Green or Brown and didn't know which to sell me because you can't mix the two. Is this true? I haven't checked it just yet but at the same time I've not seen anything regarding this issue, either. Please advise. What kind should I get, is one better than the other? Can I switch from one to the other and where should I get it?

You can mix them, no problem. The good stuff is synthetic green, the regular stuff is dino brown. You don't need the good stuff for a 3L, but many shops only use the green stuff. No point in buying two barrels when all you need is one for everything from little outboards to bigblock sterndrives. It's a bit more expensive, but not prohibitively so. I think it's well worth it! :)

It takes a little more than a quart. So get 2.
