lower unit oil in a mercrusier 80/90 ?

Im a auto repair shop owner and i was wondering why im paying 8.00 a quart for mercury lower unit oil,I was wondering if gl5 80w 90 gear oil is the same and if i can use mobil synthatic gear oil or just 80 90 gear oil ? or is there somthing diff about merc lower unit oil

You don't have to use the Mercury brand of oil, but you do need to use gear oil rated for marine use. The reason is the marine oil will absorb water and keep lubercating the bearings where the automotive will just turn to jelly and near impossible to drain out when contaminated with water.

I use Mobil 1 75W-90.....

Id follow Bondos advice here, Use a synthetic, The high performance gear oils and marine gear oils have not only moisture protection, but the have anti foaming agents also! NEVER use just a regular automotive gear lube in your lower unit! :eek: <br /><br />LubeDude

That Shell Oil Seems to be the Same as the Mobil 1 or Valvoline 75W90s Syn Oils...<br /><br />Which by the way, is What the Merc. High Performance oil is....<br />Merc. just adds a Pretty Color....
