i have several motors, most in the 50's range (johnny rudes) as well as a few 80's 4hp, 9.9 and 30.. is it ok to use regular gear oil? 80/90?

reading the containers, i cant see an difference in the marine vs gear oil. same weight, both offer corrosion properties. i change fluids annually and it does get $$. so if i change oil often is it ok to run regular gear oil?

Standard gear oil doesn't have to deal with occasional water intrusion, or operating in a wet environment. There's no way in hell I'd go cheap on gear lube considering the possible consequences.
