Ok I had this in with another post but got no response so I'm putting it out here separately.
I took the oil pump from my lower unit apart tonight to be sure it was free of debris and such. While cleaning and inspecting I noticed what looks like either a defect in the casting or the casting is simply coming apart. Either I'm betting it's not good and should be replaced.

From the texture of the surface in those low spots I'd say that's the way that it was originally cast. So if it's been working OK this long there's no reason it won't keep on working.

I don't think I'm seeing just what you are concerned about. Looks normal to me, unless I'm missing something.

There does appear to be cracks within the blue circles.

It does seem to shift ok but I don't have much of a base line to compare it to, up until now I've only have small outboards. I just don't want to have to pull the whole thing apart again.

I do have to stop into a trusted shop later this week to see if they can help with pressing in the lower driveshaft bearing so I think I'll ask them too.

It's deleted. Sometimes it takes more than 1 hour and 13 minutes to get replies from our volunteers.

Can be more difficult to shift when motor is not running.------With motor running the shift servo gets oil pressure to shift with little effort.-----I see no reason for concern with that pump housing.

I think I'll just clean it up a bit more and put it back together. Nothing moves on that surface and it's not like it needs to be a tight seal, it's covered in lube.
Guess we'll see what happens.

Sorry I guess I was being a bit impatient. I was concerned that it may have been buried to far back in the older post.

If someone can get up close and personal with it they could definitely get a better idea.

What was the issue that made you go into the gear case? Just to make sure it was clean?

The areas you circled look exactly the same as the bottoms of the holes, it's from the casting and isn't a problem.

It started with just a water pump but escalated into 3 broken bolts, a marred driveshaft and a chipped pinion. With all that out of the way it was less cumbersome for the guy at work to weld a new skeg piece on for me too.
