Lower Unit oil/water Issue

I called a repair shop to ask what kind of oil to use in the lower unit. They said 80-90 blah blah blah. So I put some "lower unit oil" from walmart in it.

Anyway...He said if it comes out watery or like coffee with cream in it there is a problem. Sure enough, pull the plug and it looks like coffee with cream. Is this bad or does it just mean old? I replace and drove on the water for half a day and the oil looked kinda milky again. Not sure if it just mixed with some of the old again.

Whats you're take?

Thanks!

HELLO ALL. we have just had the same problem with oury Evenrude 225 VRO.There is no quick fix, unfortunately, what the milky oil means is that the oil is being contaminated by water making it's way past the seals. remove the gearbox and change all the seals and you may as well replace the waterpump impellor I purchased a seal kit from our local ERvenrude agent here in South Africa,I also ordered a water pump impellor and did the job, I also took this opertunity to check and clean up all the gearbox parts, shafts, bearings, etc. Check and change the oil in the bearbox every 6 months, This job was done and completed by our apprentice training programme and achieved the desired results the motor was tested and run under daily conditions and the oil was checked and all was ok.
Kind regards William Wright

does your motor have the seals on the drain and vent plugs, they should be changed, everytime the plug is removed, and are the # 1 cause of water intrusion. change the seals, give it a try. if you still have milk shake, lower unit service is required.

Re: Lower Unit oil/water Issue

Thanks,

Where do I find the little gaskets for the plugs?

By the way it is a 77 85 HP Evinrude OB.

I should have checked to see wheather or not the water got in using the muffs. I guess that would answer the drain and vent plug theory. I'll keep ya posted.
