lower unit oil

Could some one tell me if i need to check my lower unit oil while the motor is down or when it is on the transom saver, and which way it needs to be when i fill it and how much oil does it normally take. I have a 77 140hp evinrude. thanks in advance for any info y'all can give me

As justintime said, but keep in mind some brands of lower unit lube are dark green. OMC stuff is generally light brown.

remove both the fill screw and the vent screw to drain. I like to refill from a 'square' quart bottle (32 oz) with a pump adapter that screws into the lower (fill) hole.

Pump in gear oil until it dribbles out the upper (vent) hole and replace the vent screw, remove the pump adapter, and install the fill screw. Use new gaskets.

It seems like I usually have 12 oz left after filling my lower unit, so 20 oz must be about right for a fill. Save the container and add gear oil to the container for next year's fill.

Thanks guys, I just wasnt sure where the motor needed to be to check it, Im gonna drain and fill with Amsoil lower unit oil sooner or later, its full now as i checked it with the motor down it didnt look milky or anything but i dont know when the last time it was changed. is there anything i need to do when i go from regular oil to a synthetic , like in a car motor you need to prep the engine for a synthetic by running a partial synthetic, or can i just drain and fill and haul A$$. Thanks guys

Im a genius, when i checked the LU oil for water i completly forgot that the water would be on bottom. So i drained it and sure enough there was a little bit of water in it, I let it drain over night and refilled it and ran it on the muffs for a bit (let it idle in gear for like a minute), Let it set for a couple hours and drained it again, no water, filled her up and called it a happnin. Pretty sad that i forgot the water was heavier than oil seein as how a big part of my job is figuring oil/water cuts in the feild. I might need to post this one in the SHT section.
I appreciate the advice Rick and FunPilot If either of you ever have any Questions about a diesel give me a shout. if not maybe i can repay you with some other usless information i have in my head.

I would do a pressure test on the lower unit before I called it good. If you had water...it had to come from somewhere! It probably didn't solve itself...unless it was just a loose drain/fill screw!

Running on the muffs will not put water in the lower unit, you need to submerged it and thats means in the water. Run it for a few hours IN THE WATER ON A BOAT, still picks up some water, need seals.

Bombardier's new HPF XR lower unit oil is now green also. Can't tell it from the Merc oil....They have changed after all these years.

Probably a new supplier who offered them a better deal. I have used both the dark green oil and the light brown oil, and never have noticed a difference. I would imagine that with a bit of water the green stuff would turn a lighter milky green.. luckily for me (knock on wood) I've never had an LU leak.

And you are very welcome Derek. Please check your LU again as Scatty suggests.

Took her to the lake yesturday (saturday) ran the dog out of her i even let my wife drive (crazy) was my first time out with this boat. came back home and drained again and found no water. I forgot to mention b4 that the vent screw gasket was split. replaced them b4 the work out at the lake. I was at 5000 RPM @ 50 MPH plenty fast for this country boy. no hicups or burps. I talked to my dad and he said that was as close to perfect as i was gonna get, found my trim gauge was off a bit and my bunkboards needed some attn. but outside of that it was ok. again i appreciate all you guy's help with this old boat.
