lower unit oil

when servicing my lower unit inboard outboard omc cobra it says to do it in the vertical postion and feel from the top fill port once it is full will it read on the dip stick on the upper house

I'd post this in the I/O section. I do know that is important to fill the OMC IO up properly, or your upper bearing is toast.

HOLY CRAP! Wrong section or not...this thread just saved me lots of $. I just drained & refilled my new to me boat's Cobra lower unit yesterday, refilling it just like I used to do my old outboard - till the oil comes out of the upper plug hole. plugged it back up, figured I was done. I had no Idea about the dipstick in the top. I googled it and found the correct way. Wow that was a close one. Thanks Glasstream86.

Also learned about another dipstick. :redface:

Easy way...

Drain, duh!

replace the bottom plug and take out the one just above it and forward on the drive. Fill from here to the top. This will force out the air that is trapped in this pocket that you wont get filling from the bottom. When the dipstick plug pops up it is full. Well not proper level but then you can adjust it form there. If you fill it form the bottom plug you MUST run and refill or you will burn out some bearings.

srry it was in the wrong section but i am glade i could hel;p someone out before they burned up their outdrive
