I just changed my lower unit oil for the first time myself..all the other times i took it to a shop. Right now it has about 325 hours on it and i had the 200 hr done at the shop. when i drained it...it started out golden and when the bowl that i drained it into filled up it looked greenish...is this normal? it didn't appear to be milky nor did i see much water at all come out of the lower unit. the other thing i noticed is on the top vent screw it had very very small particles of metal on the magnet but not too bad...bottom vent screw didn't have any particles(not sure that one is magnetic). should i be concerned with this or is it normal for a motor with 325 hrs on it. the unit must actually take more than a quart cause i ran out and have to get more of the yamaha gear lube to finish off the servicing tomorrow.

Re: Lower Unit Oil

magnet goes on the BOTTOM, will fit reversed but thats not how its SUPPOSED to be.
dunno on the capacity,I can tell you the F350 holds 51 OZ and the 2hp holds 1.5 OZ and the rest fall inbetween.

HAHA...well that's funny considering a yamaha dealer did my last service. i thought it was wierd being on the top. i work on jet engines from time to time and all our magnets are on the bottom of any reservoir.

Re: Lower Unit Oil

dunno
dunno what brand oil they used
as for the magnet, there again its not in the correct spot.
all bets are off.
minor metallic particles if it was in the right spot are normal.
next time your playing buy a used lower drain screw, put it in the upper hole and you now have 2 magnets to trap particles.

Re: Lower Unit Oil

Well after a yamaha dealer put the magnet in the wrong spot, no tellin what they put in there and no tellin if they even cleaned the magnet when they put it back in wrong. i can't trust them now...i know i'm putting the yamaha brand gear lube in there, using all new seals and will be putting the magnet back on the bottom. thanks for the info....you do a lot of good for this board.

dunno how much good, some folks dont like me.
sometimes I do tend to get a bit on the acebric side, especially if I am drinking while keyboarding.
but sometimes I look at my post count and think, man I need a life :).
sometimes Trainees get fuzzled.
didnt hurt anything in your case.
had a trainee at a place in Norfolk some years back. we called him TURBO.
every thing and everywhere he went was at a million MPH.
one day I walked in the shop about the time the owner was getting an earfull about the boat he just launched quit.
happend to look at the work bench and saw BOTH plugs for the gearcase laying there.
TURBO had lined up three boats and done the oil change correctly on two yet drained 3.
wasnt pretty the rest of the day.
