Apparently I had some water get into the lower unit and we just had weather below freezing. There are 2 tabs (one on top and one on bottom) that busted off of this piece when the water froze and pushed the guts outward. I need a replacement but can't find any site which identifies this part. Any help would be appreciated. Looks like it's time to replace those lower unit seals.

Re: Lower unit Part ID help

Unfortunately, your link did not download. However if what you are describing is the "plate" behind the prop that is held to the gearcase with two allen head screws, then it is called the BEARING CAGE. It is for all 3 and 4 cylinder two piece lower units. It has an Oring seal, a prop shaft seal, and also carries the outer race for the reverse gear bearing. In the Clymers diagram, it is part #52.

You should be able to get one from Franz at franzmarine.com or over at The Chrysler Crew. You will need a prop shaft seal, a drive shaft seal (26-F84307-1) and an Oring seal for between the gearcase halves. Plus a couple of other small seals

SAVE the shims from below the outer race. This bearing MUST be shimmed into the new carrier to provide proper shaft end play. You may need to buy new shims also. I THINK it is .007 end float but ask Franz, he will know it off the top of his head.

Before you go and buy one though and spring for the seals at about 50 bucks (seals), check the gears and internal bearings for spalling and rust due to the water. Spalled or rusted bearings are easy to replace but if you need gears, then you are better off buying a used lower unit. Matter of fact, you will most likely be putting a minimum of 100 bucks into the lower so it just might be worthwhile buying a used one if you can find one cheap.
