Lower Unit Problem

Hello all, I am have an issue with my lower unit. I have read many many post but still no luck with my problem. I have a 175 and do not have forward or reverse.

Things that I have done:
1) discontected cables - I can shift it into gear easy - this will engage the prop when shifting and turning the prop at the same time.
2) hooked up muffs and marked the cotter pin to prop - the prop did not spin
3) took prop off - shaft did not rotate
4) put another prop on - still no rotation
5) I can feel it engage with motor not running and prop will not turn
6) when motor is running and I engage it without cables hooked up the prop spins freely.

I don't understand how this could be. Can there be a pin broken somewhere? I dont beleive it is a spun prop or control box problem because that is all discontected. I also don't hear any grinding when I engage the linkage. I would think that it is a shift rod or drive shaft problem, but like i said with the motor not running I can engage the prop. Please someone help this is driving me crazzzzyyyyyy!!!!!!

Re: Lower Unit Problem

First, what year - model # would be even better.

It's probably just popping out of gear under load. Maybe a shift rod adjustment. Have you checked the length of the shift rod against the specs?

Re: Lower Unit Problem

it is a 1994 evinrude 175 loop charged. I never checked the length. It worked fine and never had a problem untill I put new cables on the motor a couple of weeks ago. I was running the boat and all of a sudden it felt like someone threw the boat into neutral.

Well, that could be a clutch dog also, but I'd be checking the shaft length first. Did it feel like you hit a log?

no, not a log it gave out like i put it in neutral and then it started like nothing had gone wrong and then five seconds later it gave out again.

Re: Lower Unit Problem

Well, it could still be a broke driveshaft. Usually when they break it's above the pump so it quits shifting and pumping at the same time.

So we're saying that without the motor running you can shift it into gear and the prop doesn't spin (which indicates the dog has engaged the gear).

But with the motor running you can shift it by hand (no cable) and now the prop doesn't spin?

Re: Lower Unit Problem

you are correct. that is exactly what it is doing. Can a drive shaft be inspected and changed without dropping the lower unit?
