Lower unit problems 1989 Evinrude 25 hp E25ELCEB

Hi,
Have a 1989 25 hp evinrude lower unit at the shop. The guy said he was redoing the water pump and he pulled the shaft up a little. On this particular model it says if you pull the shaft up even a little, it will scew it all up. he didnt relise this till after he put it back on his boat and tryed to run it. Said he didnt here any grinding but it wouldnt shift into any gears. My question is, is this even repairable? This is the only model that apparently does this. Its E25ELCEB I think.

Before you pull the gears out, try manuevering the drive shaft a little. The driveshaft has probably come out of the splines in the pinion gear. With a little luck, you might get the splines lined up and the shaft will drop into the pinion. Of course, if you're like me, you're not lucky enough to have that happen and you'll need to pull the gear housing apart. If you do, I'd strongly suggest that you have a manual or, better yet, have the shop that created the problem do it.
