Lower Unit Problems

I have a 1997 Evinrude 225 Ocean Pro. Recently had problems with vibration in lower unit which affected some other engine issues but got those resolved. Vibration has now turned to bucking. Mechanic looked it over and found the aluminum housing was shot. Not sure of internal components. Suggested I look for a rebuilt lower unit.

I'm located in Virginia Beach, VA. Does anyone know where I can find a rebuilt lower unit or a lower unit from someone parting out an engine?

Thanks,

The Big O

Re: Lower Unit Problems

The mechanic said that there has probably been vibration for some time now and the movement of the shaft (can hold the prop and move it pretty liberally from side to side) has worn away the inside of the aluminum housing.

I've located a unit (from e-bay) from Tri-State Marine in Chicago for $1300. Its a rebuilt unit with new internal parts. Its a GLM product.

I've checked iboats and can get a rebuilt lower unit for $1700.

Any input on GLM lower units. Anyone know who supplies the rebuilt lower units for iboats.com?

Thank you everyone for all your help.

The Big O

I would be certain to determine the cause before throwing a "new" LU on the motor. You may have setup issues or prop issues that need remedy before replacing gear case. What was the cause??

Re: Lower Unit Problems

The skeg was bent which had been causing the vibration. Wanted to wait until after the summer season to repair. I guess you live and learn.

Also, found a lower unit off a 2001 Evinrude 225 with a blown powerhead from local Evinrude dealer. Unit has been gone over and tested. $1500 which seems fair compared to what else I've seen and this is local.

The Big O

Big
I don't think the skeg being bent would cause a vibration, but would affect steering and top end performance. I think whatever action caused the skeg to deform may have caused internal damage in the process and led to failure.
I would ask the dealer to provide a 2006 season warranty if he's confident in the product he's offering.
Good luck

Re: Lower Unit Problems

Good advice Angus. The dealer offered a 90 day warranty but I got him to extend it through summer 2006 given that the boating season here is ending soon and I wouldn't have much time on the water to test it in 90 days.

The skeg also have a quarter sized chunk broken out of it too. Did seem to affect top end speed.

Big O
